Things to Do in St. Louis
A traveler to St. Louis will find a vibrant city with more things to do than you could possibly visit in a single trip. Here are a few spots to enjoy while you’re in this great city.
The Gateway Arch
Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch is St. Louis’s iconic memorial to the brave and adventurous people who followed Thomas Jefferson’s vision of a transcontinental United States. The steel structure houses a tram, and visitors can take a ride to the top for phenomenal views. Check out the newly opened museum to learn more about the Gateway Arch and the St. Louis area.
Six Flags St. Louis
Six Flags St. Louis is known as a roller-coaster hotspot, and the amusement park lives up to the reputation with nine of these exciting rides. This massive park has enough rides and entertainment to please everyone in the family, so be sure to plan a full-day adventure. The adjacent water park is included in your Six Flags ticket, so pack a bathing suit to cool down on a hot St. Louis summer day.
St. Louis Zoo
The St. Louis Zoo is an exciting outing for any day of the year. The zoo houses over 16,000 animals, and is dedicated to public education and enjoyment. Check out Sea Lion Sound, one of the zoo’s most popular exhibits, and don’t miss the orangutans or grizzly bears. The St. Louis Zoo is always free, and was voted as America’s “Top Free Attraction” by USA Today.
St. Louis Historic Sites
Riverboat Cruise
Take a riverboat cruise down the Mississippi River in a replica 19th-century paddle-wheeler boat and learn some of the history of St. Louis. Listen to a national park service ranger discuss the role of the Mississippi River in the growth of St. Louis and beyond, and see some spectacular scenery. Dinner and evening cruises are also available.
Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center
The Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center is dedicated to preserving natural habitats, both for plants native to Missouri and for plants and flowers Lewis and Clark brought back from their expedition across the United States from 1803-1806. The Center is also dedicated to education about the expedition, which embarked from St. Louis—an epic journey across an unknown land in hopes of reaching the Pacific Ocean. This museum features living history exhibitions and replicas of the boats the expedition used on their journey.
