One-Way Car Rental from Budget
Can you return a rental car to a different location?Yes, Budget does allow you to pick up your rental in one city and drop it off in another. When you make your reservation, just enter your preferred drop-off location to see the availability and fees for a one-way rental. If you have already booked a rental but wish to change your drop-off location, call Budget at 800-527-7000. Additional fees apply if you try to drop off your rental at a new location without prior authorization from Budget. |
Budget makes one-way car rentals incredibly easy and affordable. It’s best to book one-way rentals in advance, but we can usually accommodate you if your plans change in the middle of a rental.
How to Reserve a One-Way Rental
Reserving your one-way rental can be done in a few easy steps. First, find your pickup location. Then type in your drop-off location—suggestions should drop down to help you. Finalize the dates and times of your reservation, and proceed to the “Select My Car” step.
Requesting a One-Way Rental in Advance
Any reservation form on Budget.com allows you to book a car rental that you pick up in one city and drop off in another. Our one-way rental policy includes the following perks:
Over 600 U.S. corporate-operated locations participate, including both airport and non-airport sites. This wide selection of participating rental counters gives you the freedom to return your car rental at a different drop-off location.
The unlimited mileage program allows renters to drive almost anywhere in the U.S. without incurring mileage surcharges. Check your rate summary when you book to see if your locations participate.

Requesting a New Drop-Off Location After Car Pickup
Budget understands that your plans might change after your rental period begins. If you decide you want to pick up at one location and drop off at another, you must contact a Budget reservation agent at 800-527-7000. One of our agents will let you know if any return restrictions apply.
Please be aware you must contact us before returning your rental to a different drop-off location. You’ll be charged a minimum $45 Unauthorized Return Fee if you don’t contact us beforehand. You may be charged a higher amount based on the distance between the pickup location and drop-off location specified on your reservation.
One-Way Rentals into Other Countries
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, please refer to the Mexico or Canada travel advisory to ensure international travel is permitted.
The Budget rules for one-way rentals from the U.S. to other countries are as follows:
One-way rentals cannot be driven into Mexico. But you may be able to drive a USA rental into Mexico, if returning to the US—See terms for US to Mexico rentals.
Some Budget locations allow for one-way rental travel into Canada. Check the terms and conditions for your rental location.
One-way rentals to Canada are dependent on availability and must be requested in advance.

The best one-way car rental depends on your needs. Each vehicle class offers its own benefits—for example, an intermediate SUV is ideal for camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities, while a compact car is best for city driving and parking. And if you’re taking a long road trip, an economy vehicle will help you save at the gas pump.
Can someone else return my rental car?
If you pre-authorize an additional driver when you make your Budget rental car reservation, that person can return your rental car. Budget’s Additional Driver Policy states that pre-authorized additional drivers must be a spouse or domestic partner, a fellow employee or employer, or a companion driver to a renter with a disability.
